Global long‐term passive microwave satellite‐based retrievals of vegetation optical depth

چکیده
[1] Vegetation optical depth (VOD) retrievals from three satellite‐based passive microwave instruments were merged to produce the first long‐term global microwave‐based vegetation product. The resulting VOD product spans more than two decades and shows seasonal cycles and inter‐ annual variations that generally correspond with those observed in the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Some notable differences exist in the long‐term trends: the NDVI, operating in the optical regime, is sensitive to chlorophyll abundance and photosynthetically active biomass of the leaves, whereas the microwave‐based VOD is an indicator of the vegetation water content in total above‐ ground biomass, i.e., including wood and leaf components. Preliminary analyses indicate that the fluctuations in VOD typically correlated to precipitation variations, and that the mutually independent VOD and NDVI do not necessarily respond in identical manners. Considering both products together provides a more robust structural characterization and assessment of long‐term vegetation dynamics at the global scale. Citation: Liu, Y. Y., R. A.M. de Jeu,M. Using vegetation indices for soil-moisture retrievals from passive microwave radiometry
Surface soil moisture and the nature of the overlying vegetation both influence microwave emission from land surfaces significantly. One widely discussed but underused method for allowing for the effect of vegetation on soil-moisture retrievals from microwave observations is to use remotely sensed vegetation indices. This paper explores the potential for using the Normalised Difference Vegetati...

Spaceborne microwave remote sensing is widely used to monitor global environmental changes for understanding hydrological, ecological, and climate processes. A new global land parameter data record (LPDR) was generated using similar calibrated, multifrequency brightness temperature (Tb) retrievals from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS (AMSR-E) and the Advanced Microwave Scanni...

The land surface phenology (LSP) start of season (SOS) metric signals the seasonal onset of vegetation activity, including canopy growth and associated increases in land-atmosphere water, energy and carbon (CO2) exchanges influencing weather and climate variability. The vegetation optical depth (VOD) parameter determined from satellite passive microwave remote sensing provides for global LSP mo...
متن کاملComparing Optical and Microwave Remote Sensing-based Vegetation Density over Mongolia for 1988-2006
Vegetation density plays an important role in water and energy balance. Satellite-based optical and microwave sensors are expected to provide complementary vegetation information. Here we compared NDVI from AVHRR and vegetation optical depth (VOD) from SSM/I over Mongolia from 1988 through 2006. Both products show similar spatial distribution in annual average and are able to capture similar in...
